Jury Backs Death for ‘Sausage King’

A jury decided Tuesday that self-proclaimed “sausage king” Stuart Alexander should be executed for killing three meat inspectors.

Alexander, 43, was convicted in October of three counts of first-degree murder for the 2000 shooting deaths of two federal inspectors and one state inspector at his Santos Linguisa factory in San Leandro.

The incident was captured on Alexander’s surveillance videotape, which he turned on before the shootings and which was shown repeatedly to jurors during the five-month trial.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Vernon Nakahara will formally sentence Alexander on Feb. 15. The judge will have the option of reducing the sentence to life in prison.

Settlement Reached Over Flood Deaths, Damage

A lawsuit over a 1997 Yuba County flood that killed three people and destroyed 850 homes will cost the state and county $47 million to settle, said the Appeal-Democrat of Marysville-Yuba City.

Heavy January rains seven years ago caused a levee to rupture on the Feather River near the town of Arboga, flooding hundreds of acres of farmland. Without admitting any liability, state and local officials have accepted the terms of the settlement.

Exonerated Firefighter to Return to Work

A city fire captain who had been accused -- and then cleared -- of raping his daughter will go back to work next month, city officials said.

Michael Tecklenburg had been on administrative leave since he was arrested Sept. 14 and charged on suspicion of raping his 15-year-old daughter, who had run away from home.

But the girl testified that she had been pressured by investigators into making the allegations.

Last week, a San Joaquin County Superior Court judge dismissed the charges, citing insufficient evidence.

City Mishandled Studies on Wal-Mart, Court Says

A court has ruled that the city botched the environmental impact studies needed to build a Wal-Mart Supercenter and two other large retail stores -- and told city officials that they will have to do them again.

The decision by Fresno’s 5th District Court of Appeal means that the half-built frame of the huge Wal-Mart will stand empty as the city and developers go through up to a year of studies and public meetings.
