Irvine Ends 11-Game Road Losing Streak

Aaron Fitzgerald scored 17 points to help UC Irvine end an 11-game road losing streak with a 70-58 victory at Santa Clara on Tuesday night.

Greg Ethington had 14 points and nine rebounds as Irvine (3-2) won its first game away from home since January. It was also the Anteaters’ first nonconference road win since defeating St. Mary’s on Dec. 22, 2002. Ross Schraeder also scored 14.

Doron Perkins and Kyle Bailey each scored 13 points to lead Santa Clara (6-4), which lost its second game in a row.

Among Santa Clara’s wins this season is a 77-66 decision over then-No. 1 North Carolina on Nov. 19 and an 86-76 win over Stanford on Nov. 28.

After Brody Angley made a three-point basket, giving the Broncos a 34-31 lead in the first 10 seconds of the second half, Irvine went on a 19-6 run -- with Ethington and Fitzgerald accounting for 17 of the points -- to open a 50-40 lead with 12:05 left.

No. 7 Duke 88, Illinois Chicago 55 -- Shelden Williams had 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lift the Blue Devils over the Flames (3-4) at Durham, N.C.

J.J. Redick had 21 points for Duke, which used a 21-0 run spanning both halves to improve to 7-0 for the fourth time in five seasons.

Duke finished with 19 points off 23 turnovers and blocked a school-record 18 shots.

No. 13 Louisville 85, North Carolina A&T; 51 -- Larry O’Bannon scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (6-1) over the Aggies (1-8) at Louisville, Ky.

Francisco Garcia had 12 points and Ellis Myles had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Louisville, which shot 43.2% from the field (29 for 67).

Oregon 73, Bethune Cookman 65 -- Freshmen Bryce Taylor and Malik Hairston combined for 35 points to lead the Ducks (5-1) over the Wildcats (3-4) at Eugene, Ore.

Memphis forward Sean Banks was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Coach John Calipari did not elaborate. Banks, the Tigers’ second-leading scorer averaging 16 points and 6.1 rebounds, has played in all nine games this season.
