Morrow Shines for Stars

Brenden Morrow’s hard work paid off on the scoreboard.

Morrow had his first three-goal game in the surging Dallas Stars’ 5-4 victory over Phoenix on Saturday night at Glendale, Ariz.

“Brenden’s always all over it, knocking on the door almost every shift,” Star goalie Marty Turco said. “It’s nice to see a guy who does all the little things right, a guy we can’t win without in crunch time, get some results.”

David Oliver scored the winning goal, Bill Guerin also scored and Steve Ott had two assists for the Stars, who are 7-1-1 in their last nine games. Since losing, 2-1, in Arizona on Dec. 10 to cap a five-game losing streak, Dallas is 15-5-6.

Shane Doan, Ladislav Nagy, Chris Gratton and Mike Sillinger scored for the Coyotes, who have lost three straight games and are 2-6-1-1 at home since moving to Glendale Arena on Dec. 27.

The Coyotes had seven consecutive power plays in the first and second periods and spent 12:12 of the second period with the man advantage but scored only once.

Toronto 5, Ottawa 1 -- Gary Roberts scored two of the Maple Leafs’ four power-play goals and Coach Pat Quinn reached a milestone in the victory at Toronto.

Quinn became only the fourth coach in NHL history to win 600 regular-season games, joining Scotty Bowman, Al Arbour and Dick Irvin.

The Maple Leafs entered the game in an 0-for-25 slump on the power play, but went four for seven.

Philadelphia 5, Pittsburgh 3 -- Patrick Sharp and John LeClair scored just more than a minute apart in the second period to lead the Flyers at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins have lost nine in a row since beating the Flyers, 2-1, in Philadelphia on Jan. 12 and have dropped a franchise-record nine in a row at home since last winning there Dec. 29.

New Jersey 4, St. Louis 1 -- Brian Gionta scored two goals, and Martin Brodeur made 30 saves to lead the Devils at St. Louis.

Sergei Brylin and Patrik Elias had goals for the defending-champion Devils, who are 6-2-1 in their last nine games.

Keith Tkachuk scored for the Blues, who are winless in their last four games against the Devils.

Nashville 3, San Jose 2 -- Marek Zidlicky scored with 16 seconds left in overtime to lead the Predators at Nashville.

Nashville’s Scott Walker tied the score at 7:22 of the third period, and David Legwand also scored for the Predators. Patrick Marleau and Wayne Primeau scored for San Jose.

Carolina 4, Detroit 4 -- Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and an assist and Tomas Holmstrom also scored twice at Detroit as the host Red Wings overcame a 4-1 third-period deficit.

Holmstrom scored from the bottom of the left circle on a one-time shot off a pass from Brendan Shanahan to tie the score, 4-4, with 3:21 left in the third period.

Vancouver 6, Washington 1 -- Markus Naslund scored his 29th goal and had an assist at Washington as the Canucks had four power-play goals.

Brad May, Wade Brookbank, Trevor Linden, Jarkko Ruutu and Sammy Salo also scored to help the Canucks to their fifth straight victory.

Columbus 2, Minnesota 1 -- Anders Eriksson’s long slap shot deflected off a Wild player and beat goalie Dwayne Roloson 2:59 into overtime to lead the Blue Jackets at Columbus, Ohio.

After an NHL-record 15 consecutive overtime ties to start the season, the Wild lost their second overtime game in 48 hours. They fell, 3-2, to Montreal on Thursday.

Buffalo 3, New York Rangers 1 -- J.P. Dumont and Maxim Afinogenov scored power-play goals in the first period to lead the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y.

Miroslav Satan had an empty-net goal, and Martin Biron stopped 31 shots as the Sabres won their season-high fourth straight game.

Boston 1, Montreal 0 -- Andrew Raycroft made 34 saves for his third shutout of the season, and Glen Murray scored on a power play early in the second period to lead the Bruins at Montreal.

Canadien goalie Jose Theodore lost his fourth consecutive start.

New York Islanders 4, Florida 2 -- Jason Blake broke a tie with 8:12 left and had an empty-net goal for the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y. Radek Martinek and Trent Hunter also scored for the Islanders, and Garth Snow made 25 saves.

Tampa Bay 5, Atlanta 2 -- Fredrik Modin had two goals and an assist at Tampa, Fla., to lead the Southeast Division-leading Lightning, which took an 11-point lead in the standings over the Thrashers.
