Saint Joseph’s 81-67 Victory Has the Look of Perfection

Delonte West had 24 points, and Jameer Nelson added 16 points and seven assists to help No. 3 Saint Joseph’s remain undefeated with an 81-67 victory over Dayton on Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

Tyrone Barley had 14 points for the Hawks (21-0, 10-0 Atlantic 10), who snapped a three-game losing streak against the Flyers (19-4, 9-1), who had won nine in a row.

Saint Joseph’s and No. 2 Stanford (20-0) remain the only defeated teams in Division I. Rhode Island is the only team with a winning record remaining on the Hawks’ schedule.

The Flyers’ talented frontcourt was expected to be the biggest threat to the Hawks’ unblemished record.

“When people say something negative about the frontcourt, I take it personally because I’m in the frontcourt,” said center Dwayne Jones, who blocked three shots. “My attitude every game is to shut people up. Hopefully, I shut them up tonight.”

No. 1 Duke 93, Virginia 75 -- J.J. Redick scored 25 points and Shelden Williams had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Blue Devils (21-1, 10-0 Atlantic Coast) extended their winning streak to 39 at Durham, N.C. Duke has won 18 of 20 games against Virginia (12-9, 2-8) dating to the 1995-96 season.

No. 6 Mississippi State 79, No. 25 South Carolina 75 -- Timmy Bowers made a three-point basket to force overtime, and Branden Vincent’s foul shot with 53 seconds left in the extra session gave the Bulldogs (20-1, 9-1 Southeastern) the lead for good in a victory over the Gamecocks (19-5, 6-4) at Columbia, S.C.

No. 13 Cincinnati 80, South Florida 67 -- Tony Bobbitt scored a season-high 26 points at Cincinnati as the Bearcats (17-3, 8-2 Conference USA) defeated the Bulls (6-14, 0-9).

No. 17 Wisconsin 54, Iowa 52 -- Devin Harris scored 16 points at Iowa City, Iowa, and the Badgers (16-4, 7-2 Big Ten) survived a late rally by the Hawkeyes (12-9, 5-5) to hold on to first place in the conference.

Oklahoma 63, No. 18 Texas Tech 48 -- Freshman Lawrence McKenzie scored 15 points and the Sooners (15-5, 5-4 Big 12) scored an inspired victory over the Red Raiders (17-6, 5-4) at Norman, Okla.

No. 23 Southern Illinois 96, Drake 76 -- Jamaal Tatum scored 19 points at Carbondale, Ill., and the Salukis (19-2, 13-0 Missouri Valley), justifying their first appearance in the top 25 since 1976, cruised to a victory over Drake (9-12, 5-8).

No. 24 Providence 100, Villanova 74 -- Donnie McGrath scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half at Villanova, Pa., as the Friars (16-5, 7-3 Big East) handed the Wildcats (13-9, 5-4) their worst loss of the season.

OTHER GAMES

Northwestern (10-11, 5-5 Big Ten) scored another improbable victory, stopping Purdue, 40-39, at West Lafayette, Ind. The Boilermakers (15-8, 5-5) have lost three of four.... Kris Humphries and Ben Johnson each scored 20 points at Minneapolis as Minnesota (9-13, 1-9) snapped its eight-game losing streak with an 81-78 victory over Michigan (13-7, 4-5).... Bracey Wright scored 25 points at State College, Pa., to lead Indiana (12-9, 6-4) to a 75-56 victory over Penn State (9-11, 3-6).

Jarrett Hart scored 21 points at Manhattan, Kan., as Kansas State (13-7, 4-5 Big 12) defeated Iowa State, 90-59. The Cyclones (13-7, 4-5) have lost 21 consecutive Big 12 road games.... Vanderbilt (15-5, 4-5 SEC) held Georgia (11-10, 3-7) without a field goal over a 14-minute stretch in a 61-39 victory at Nashville.... Jared Dudley scored nine of his career-high 24 points in overtime, lifting Boston College (16-7, 5-5 Big East) past Miami, 74-72, at Coral Gables, Fla. The Hurricanes (13-11, 3-7) have lost six in a row.

Kellen Miliner scored 22 points at Omaha, as Creighton (18-3, 10-3 Missouri Valley) rolled to a 74-56 victory over Bradley (10-14, 3-10).... Antonio Burks scored 25 points to lift Memphis (17-4, 8-2, Conference USA) to a 79-73 victory over East Carolina (9-11, 1-9) at Greenville, N.C.... Taylor Coppenrath scored 17 points and Vermont (16-5, 12-0 America East) rallied for a 67-60 victory over Stony Brook (6-16, 3-10) at Stony Brook, N.Y.
