It Wasn’t a Banner Day for Mexican Soccer Fans

Share

What would the reaction be if the Mexican Olympic soccer team were playing the U.S. in the Rose Bowl and the U.S. fans drowned out the Mexican national anthem with boos, whistles and chants of “USA, USA”? There would be an angry response touting the Americans as rude and arrogant, official apologies would be called for and given, and the U.S. would be made to look foolish on the world stage.

As a lifetime player, coach and fan of soccer, I understand the passions that the game can evoke. Boo the players, boo the team, but respect the national anthem. The last time I checked, the U.S. and Mexico were allies, so why the hostility? The athletes who earn the right and honor to play for their country deserve to stand proud and listen to their national anthem at home or on the road. I can only hope that when the two teams meet on American soil, the fans will remember to show respect and dignity.
