Southern Illinois Stays Up Late to Beat Hawaii

Midnight Madness came a little later this season.

Darren Brooks scored 18 points, including a three-pointer with 28 seconds left, leading No. 20 Southern Illinois to a 66-62 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night at Carbondale, Ill. The game started Sunday morning at 12:07 a.m. EST, 11:07 p.m. Saturday night in Illinois, in order to accommodate a national TV broadcast. Time in Illinois at the end of the game was 12:57 a.m.

Brad Korn added 10 points, helping the Salukis (22-2) extend their winning streak to 14 games.

Phil Martin scored 20 points to lead Hawaii (17-7). Jeff Blackett added 16 points and Michael Kuebler scored 14.

Hawaii led by seven points twice early in the second half before Southern Illinois tied it at 45 with 14:32 left. The teams then were tied twice, the last time at 51-51.

Southern Illinois went on an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 59-51. Southern Illinois outrebounded Hawaii, 34-33. Hawaii had 24 turnovers while Southern Illinois made 18. The Rainbow Warriors led, 38-35, at halftime.
