The losing, the chants and the lack of effort from the New York Rangers convinced Glen Sather it was time to start making changes -- beginning with himself.

Sather stepped down Wednesday as coach of the Rangers, staying on as president and general manager and signaling that more changes lie ahead as the March 9 trading deadline nears.

Assistant coach Tom Renney was promoted to interim coach. With 20 games remaining, the Rangers are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, 14 points behind the eighth-place New York Islanders.
