Stanford Continues to Stay in Control

Kelley Suminski had 22 points and a career-high 10 assists to lead No. 9-ranked Stanford over Washington State, 90-69, Friday night in Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball at Pullman, Wash.

Kristen Newlin, a 6-foot-5 freshman, added a school-record eight blocked shots for the Cardinal (10-2, 3-0 Pac-10).

Jessica Perry scored 18 points for Washington State (4-8, 0-3).

Stanford reached season highs of 57.4% (31 for 54) field-goal shooting and 65% (13 of 20) on three-point shooting. The Cardinal was 15 for 16 (93.8%) from the free-throw line.

The Cardinal is 3-0 since losing preseason All-American Nicole Powell to a sprained ankle. Powell had led Stanford with averages of 19.9 points and 10.9 rebounds.

No. 5 Tennessee 74, No. 19 Texas Christian 66 -- Tasha Butts scored 19 points and the Lady Vols (9-1) overcame a season-high 24 turnovers to hold off the Horned Frogs (10-2) at Fort Worth. Tennessee limited Texas Christian to a season-low 31% (19-of-58) shooting.

TCU cut Tennessee’s lead to 68-64 with 1:18 remaining. But the Lady Vols pulled away as Butts made two free throws and LaToya Davis converted a steal into a layup with 49 seconds remaining.

“There was no way this game was going to be pretty at the pace it was being played,” Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt said of the frenetic pace. “It was ugly at times, but I’ll take an ugly win and smile about it.”

Tracy Wynn’s 12 points led TCU.

No. 10 Penn State 47, No. 7 Purdue 42 -- Tanisha Wright scored 17 points to lead the Nittany Lions (8-3) over the Boilermakers (9-2) in a Big Ten opener for both at West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue made 21% of its shots, the second-lowest percentage in school history.

No. 14 North Carolina 90, Wake Forest 79 -- Ivory Latta scored 30 points and fellow freshman Camille Little added 28 and 13 rebounds for the Tar Heels (11-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) at Chapel Hill, N.C. Erin Ferrell led Wake Forest (7-6, 0-2) with 22 points.

No. 16 Virginia Tech 52, Liberty 45 -- Dawn Chriss scored 15 points, including three in the final minute, as the Hokies (11-0) beat the Flames (6-6) at Blacksburg, Va.

No. 18 Ohio State 65, Wisconsin 46 -- LaToya Turner had 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks to lead the Buckeyes (9-2) over the Badgers (5-5) in a Big Ten opener for both teams at Columbus, Ohio.

No. 22 Boston College 61, Villanova 48 -- Amber Jacobs scored 10 of her 22 points in the closing 3:42 to lift the Eagles (11-1) in a Big East opener for both teams at Boston. The Wildcats (10-2) had a 10-game winning streak snapped. It was their longest since the 1995-96 season.

No. 23 Michigan State 59, Indiana 41 -- Reserve Rene Haynes scored 11 points to lead the Spartans (10-1) in a Big Ten opener for both teams at East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers (7-5), who trailed, 33-24, at halftime, made only four field goals in the second half.

No. 24 Vanderbilt 61, Syracuse 52 -- Ashley Earley had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Commodores (11-1) at Nashville. Julie McBride had 22 points for Syracuse(3-6), which suited up only seven players because of recent suspensions and departures.

No. 25 Utah 75, San Francisco 48 -- Kim Smith scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half as the Utes (9-3) extended their home winning streak at Salt Lake City at 22 games. San Francisco made only 21% of its shots in the second half.
