Disney Takes a Ride Down Colorado Blvd.

Re “Disney’s Parade Float Hits a New Low,” Jan. 6: Columnist Patt Morrison has herself hit a new low. To be so thoroughly outraged and scandalized by a float that to me looked more like one of those practice towers that local fire departments use to train firemen is nothing short of silly. It didn’t look anything like the World Trade Center towers.

But then to further stress the politically correct wimp factor, she compares Disney to the Baath Party and then goes on to claim that Disney films like “Bambi,” “Dumbo,” “Lady and the Tramp” and “Snow White” are scarier than Alfred Hitchcock films.

If Morrison hasn’t grown up any more than that by now, she should just stay in her sandbox where it’s safe.

I couldn’t agree more with Morrison’s column condemning Disney for its Tower of Terror float in the Rose Parade. Any company that forks over the tens of thousands of dollars necessary to plan and build one of these lovely floral creations deserves to have its name tastefully displayed on the float for all to see. However, the Disney commercial for a new attraction at its theme park reaches a new low for the crass commercialization of what once was a wonderful event. Disney was not alone, however.

Rainbird Corp., which has consistently won many prizes with its beautiful floats, doesn’t include pulsating sprinklers on board. Most of the other sponsors do not as well. I am truly disappointed in the Rose Parade committee, which allowed some companies to co-opt a once-beautiful event and turn it into one long commercial.
