Jaromir Jagr’s “one-in-a-million” goal with eight-tenths of a second remaining capped one of the craziest games of the season.

Jagr was behind the goal line near the boards when he shot. The desperate fling struck the bottom of the net, bounced up and struck goaltender Jamie McLennan behind the left knee and went in, giving the Capitals a 3-3 tie with the Calgary Flames at Washington.

“I had no choice. I know there’s no time left, and I just pushed it,” Jagr said. “It was just a lucky shot.”

Said McLennan: “It jumped up and hit my knee. It was just a one-in-a-million shot.”

That one goal would be incredible in itself, but it happened to be the sixth goal in a wild six-minute stretch in a game that long appeared headed for a scoreless tie.

There were no goals for the first 54 minutes, but Trent Whitfield scored his first of the season for the Capitals, and the onslaught was on.

Matthew Lombardi and Oleg Saprykin scored 29 seconds apart to give the Flames the lead. Sergei Gonchar tied it at 2-2 on a power-play goal with exactly one minute remaining. Jerome Iginla punched in the puck from the right of the crease with 38 seconds left to put the Flames back ahead. Then Jagr came through with his 15th goal of the season.

Montreal 2, Atlanta 1 -- The Canadiens’ Mike Ribeiro received credit for the game-winning goal with 10 1/2 minutes remaining at Montreal when Atlanta defenseman Ivan Majesky knocked the puck in his own net with his right glove before running into the goalie.

Montreal won for the sixth time in seven games, getting 36 saves from Jose Theodore.

Detroit 4, Chicago 2 -- Niklas Kronwall scored his first NHL goal, helping the Red Wings win at Chicago. Jason Woolley, Ray Whitney and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored for Detroit.
