Bare Necessities Getting By

Share

Bare Necessities is a cut below the best in her division, but the 5-year-old gray mare has made a nice living for Iron County Farms Inc. and trainer Wally Dollase.

The daughter of Silver Deputy has won seven of 17 starts, earning $733,281. Her owners hope to improve on those figures in today’s $75,000 Paseana Handicap at Santa Anita.

Bare Necessities will be seeking her second local victory against five opponents in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Since finishing a distant third as the 9-10 favorite in last month’s Bayakoa Handicap at Hollywood Park, the Kentucky-bred has trained well. Jose Valdivia Jr. will ride the 122-pound highweight.

Ron McAnally, the Hall of Famer who trained the brilliant mare for whom today’s race is named, will send out both La Tour, who scored in her U.S. debut on the turf Dec. 13 at Hollywood Park, and probable pacesetter Southern Oasis.

Completing the small cast are Tropical Blossom, who won the Star Ball Handicap on Nov. 29 at Golden Gate Fields; Angel Gift, who was fourth in the Bayakoa Handicap, and longshot Impetuous Fling.

Race of the day: Tangle, second in all three of her U.S. races for trainer Craig Dollase, will make her first start since April 18 in today’s sixth, a $56,000 allowance at one mile on the turf, at Santa Anita. Corey Nakatani will ride the Bob Back filly for owner J. Paul Reddam.

Other contenders include Perfect World, Night Games and Lady Sabrina.

One for the road: Gimme a Vee makes her first start for trainer Bill Morey and gets a jockey upgrade to Jose Alferez in today’s fifth at Golden Gate Fields.

The 3-year-old Victory Gallop might be a single in the pick six, which has a carry-over of more than $241,000.
