2-part election epic to open La Jolla Playhouse’s season
“Continental Divide,” David Edgar’s two-part epic about a gubernatorial election in an unnamed state very much like California, will open La Jolla Playhouse’s season, June 6 to Aug. 1.
Consisting of one play about Republicans and one about Democrats -- “Mothers Against” and “Daughters of the Revolution,” respectively -- “Divide” opened last spring at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and later played Berkeley Repertory Theatre. It will travel to two venues in England before the La Jolla run. The La Jolla production will feature only two cast changes from the Berkeley engagement.
Edgar, best known as the adapter of the “Nicholas Nickleby” epic for the stage, and director Tony Taccone “will both be in residence at the playhouse to further develop and streamline the production,” said La Jolla artistic director Des McAnuff.
McAnuff also announced that Romanian director Nona Ciobanu will stage Carlo Gozzi’s “The Love of Three Oranges” at La Jolla, Oct. 3-31.
