UCLA to have designer’s archive

Share

The UCLA Library has acquired the archive of Bonnie Cashin, one of America’s foremost fashion designers from the mid-20th century, including her sketches and writings.

Cashin, who died in 2000, is associated with stylish yet practical designs, such as the funnel-necked poncho. Earning acclaim as a pioneer in the sportswear industry, she became the first designer of Coach handbags in 1962. Inspired by the hardware on convertible tops, she created Coach’s hallmark brass toggle. She also designed costumes for more than 60 films. The archive is accompanied by a $1.5-million gift from her estate.
