The body of a 16-year-old Santa Ana girl who disappeared two years ago has been identified in Mexico, a deputy Baja California state prosecutor said.

Relatives of Lillian June Serianne, 16, confirmed that a body found on a highway between Ensenada and Tijuana in 2001 was hers, according to Santa Ana police.

Serianne’s family believed she had run away from home with her boyfriend July 3, 2001, said the prosecutor, Sonia Navarro.

But Serianne’s mother recently found out that a body was discovered in Mexico the next day, Navarro said.

Given photos of that body, she identified it as her daughter’s.

The girl had been stabbed and beaten with a tire iron. Mexican officials could not identify the body at the time, and it was buried in Ensenada.

It is still there, and it was unclear Tuesday when or if it will be exhumed.

Santa Ana police said they are looking at several people in a continuing investigation and appealed for anyone with information on the crime to call their offices at (714) 647-5111. No arrests have been made in the case.
