Pyramid Lake Recreation Area was closed to the public Tuesday after the private company that operates the lake failed to make payments to the U.S. Forest Service, a spokeswoman for the Angeles National Forest said.

The lake could remain closed up to four months.

The forest service’s permit with the concessionaire, Pyramid Enterprises, has been terminated, and forest officials plan to oversee the lake’s operation after it reopens until a new concessionaire can be found, spokeswoman Kathy Peterson said.

Set next to Interstate 5 in the mountains of the southern Los Padres range about 60 miles north of Los Angeles, Pyramid Lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing and camping.

The closure comes on the heels of a narrowly averted plan to close nearby Castaic Lake, which is owned by the state but operated by Los Angeles County, both of which are in the midst of serious budget problems.

Boats stored at Pyramid Lake must be picked up by the end of February, officials said. Owners with questions may call the Santa Clara/Mojave Rivers Ranger District at (661) 296-9710.
