DePodesta, Tracy Still on the Hot Seat

Share

Will someone please tell Paul DePodesta that he isn’t in Kansas City or Montreal -- or even Oakland? Waiting to see how the team does before making a move? This kind of talk in June, no less? Am I the only one amazed by these words from the mouth of a Dodger general manager, regardless of the on-the-cheap reputation of the owner? Holy Kevin Malone! At least Dodger Boy gave it a shot, however misguided. And a fine message to Jim Tracy who, with DePodesta essentially preparing to close up the tent before the Fourth of July, is now officially added to the growing list of lame-duck managers on the chopping block.

So this week will determine whether the Dodgers are buyers or sellers, huh? With his failure to acquire a needed bat or additional pitching, Paul DePodesta should be saying that this week will determine whether he’s cut out to be a general manager. Those of us who have visited the stadium know this gutty Dodger team isn’t talented enough, or well-coached enough, to go far into the postseason without an upgrade or two.

I hope DePodesta takes the training wheels off and does what he’s paid to do. It would be a shame to waste this fine first half of the season.

There is only one way to end the speculation as to just how much Jim Tracy is to blame for the Dodgers’ subpar performances over the last couple of seasons -- fire him and see what happens.

No teams of the past ever walked greats like Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays or Ted Williams four times in a row as the wimpy Dodgers did to Barry Bonds on Tuesday. No wonder L.A. hasn’t won a playoff game in 16 years. You can’t be the best if you’re afraid of facing the best one on one.

I am amused and puzzled by the booing of Barry Bonds at Tuesday’s game. While the alleged use of steroids would certainly make him stronger, any knowledgeable baseball fan should know that the key to his consistent hitting is his fantastic hand-eye coordination, just as it was for any of the great batters of the past who knew nothing about steroids: Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, to name a few.

I know Frank McCourt won’t ever go out and get Jeff Weaver run support, but can you please put a stop to the stupid people who sit behind home plate, call their friend on a cellphone and then wave at them on television for three innings? You know who you are -- lady in the visor on Tuesday night.

Forget Shaq. Eric Gagne’s the most dominant ever, bar none.
