L.A. County Has Own Juvenile Justice Models

Share

Re “Spare the Rod, Save the Child,” July 1: L.A. County need look no further than Highland Park, Chino Hills, Woodland Hills and Chatsworth to see juvenile justice models akin to the acclaimed Missouri model. Without fences and locked doors, Optimist Youth and Family Services, Boys Republic, Pacific Lodge Youth Services and Rancho San Antonio have been offering juvenile offenders the combination of treatment, caring, firm limits and peer support.

Not only do these organizations provide structured residential programs, but they have pioneered day treatment and follow-up programs in the community to help young probationers stay on the straight and narrow. Let’s not overlook Los Angeles’ home-grown organizations whose groundbreaking approaches date back half a century and more.
