Carmakers Just Cater to Consumers

“Big Autos’ Big Profits Make a Shift Unlikely” (June 27), about carmakers’ trading better gasoline mileage for larger profits, screamed out for a response.

The last quote, by Tom Kloza, chief analyst for the Oil Price Information Service in Lakewood, N.J., is the most egregious. He states: “It amazes me how much Detroit doesn’t get it.”

In fact, Detroit does get it, but Kloza does not like the answer. Detroit (and Dearborn) delivers exactly what the consumers want.

The buyers of large sport utility vehicles buy them because the SUVs meet their needs. The buyers have not been forced to buy SUVs. They freely chose to do so, which is exactly how the free market operates.
