A view of ‘Giants’ from inside the curl

I was astounded and disappointed to read Manohla Dargis’ review of “Riding Giants” (“Before the Culture Began an Industry,” July 9). It was as if, through some personal bias or blind spot, she saw a different movie than the one that was made. Certainly not the movie I saw.

I plead guilty to being a surfer and coming with my own biases and blind spots -- but they are ones of greater sensitivity and sense of protectionism for the sport. And what director Stacey Peralta and his co-writer, Sam George, achieved is not some “back-slapping boy talk” but rather a thoughtful, insightful and compelling documentary.
