Oxnard Panel OKs 133% Pay Raise for Itself
A divided Oxnard City Council voted this week to grant itself a 133% pay raise, from $600 a month to $1,400 a month.
City Manager Ed Sotelo recommended that the five council members increase their salaries because, he said, they should be adequately compensated for their long hours and hard work. The panel had not received a pay increase in 19 years.
The council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday in favor of the pay hike, which will take effect in December. Mayor Manuel Lopez and Councilman John Zaragoza -- both of whom are running for county supervisor in the fall -- voted against the increase.
Council members in Thousand Oaks, the second largest city in Ventura County behind Oxnard, earn $1,309 a month, while those in Simi Valley, the county’s third largest city, receive $959.42 a month.
