Barry Bonds got to celebrate on his 40th birthday, even if the St. Louis Cardinals wouldn’t allow him to contribute.

A day after Bonds hit a three-run, seventh-inning home run in the Giants’ victory over St. Louis, he drew his major league-leading 79th intentional walk at a key spot in San Francisco’s 5-3, 10-inning win at St. Louis.

“A game on his birthday is like any other game for him,” Manager Felipe Alou said. “The other team is so busy worrying about him, thinking about when will he bat next and what will the situation be. He’s a factor no matter what day it is.”

Chris Carpenter, left in to pitch against J.T. Snow after the walk to Bonds, got an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth that preserved a tie.

But the Giants went ahead for good in the 10th on Edgaro Alfonzo’s two-run homer off Ray King and sent the Cardinals to their first extra-inning loss in seven games this season. Alfonzo twice failed to get a bunt down earlier in the count, and he ended up with his seventh homer.

Philadelphia 4, Chicago 3 -- Paul Abbott got his first win with the Phillies and drove in the first two runs of his career at Philadelphia. The Cubs’ Sammy Sosa homered in the first, reaching 20 for the 12th consecutive season.

Montreal 6, Florida 2 -- Endy Chavez hit a tying two-run triple in the sixth, then scored the go-ahead run on Jamey Carroll’s sacrifice fly to lead the Expos at home. Rocky Biddle gave up two runs and six hits in six innings, his longest outing in three starts since joining the rotation.

Houston 6, Milwaukee 3 -- Tim Redding gave up only three hits over five innings in his return to the Astros’ starting rotation. Houston improved to 4-5 since Phil Garner replaced Jimy Williams as manager during the All-Star break.

Atlanta 5, New York 2 -- Julio Franco’s score-tying double at New York keyed the Braves’ four-run rally in the eighth inning. It was the Mets’ eighth loss in 11 games and the fourth straight loss in which the bullpen has taken the defeat.

Pittsburgh 14, Cincinnati 4 -- Jason Kendall’s two-run double put the Pirates ahead during a seven-run sixth inning and Pittsburgh rallied at home from three runs down. Barry Larkin collected three hits, including a home run, moving him past Dave Concepcion into second place in Reds’ history with 2,327 hits, but Cincinnati still lost its fourth in a row.

Colorado 8, Arizona 2 -- The Rockies’ Vinny Castilla tied a career high by homering in his fourth straight game, at Phoenix. The Diamondbacks hit into a franchise-high five double plays in losing their 13th consecutive game and 10th straight at home to extend club records.
