Nomo Goes Five Innings

Hideo Nomo made a successful rehabilitation start Thursday night for triple-A Las Vegas, giving up five hits and three runs in five innings during the 51s’ 14-3 victory over the Edmonton Trappers at Las Vegas.

The Dodger right-hander, recovering from a split nail on his right index finger that landed him on the disabled list, struck out two and walked three while throwing 37 of his 67 pitches for strikes.

Nomo, who is 3-5 with a 7.13 earned-run average, is expected to rejoin the Dodgers in Arizona over the weekend and pitch Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays at SkyDome as the Dodgers open interleague play.

Edwin Jackson accompanied the Dodgers to Arizona before their three-game series with the Diamondbacks but is expected to be sent back to triple-A Las Vegas after giving up one run in five innings during his season debut. The Dodgers won’t need a fifth starter again until June 12, and Manager Jim Tracy has said he would rather have Jackson pitching in Las Vegas than sitting on the bench with the Dodgers.

“I’ll just do whatever I’m told and be happy with it,” Jackson said. “I’m a young player trying to establish himself, and I’m taking everything with a smile and continuing on. If I have to go back down, I’ll continue doing what I’ve been doing, I won’t be discouraged. I’ll continue to work to get back up.”
