Weaver and Long Beach Get Past Stanford, 7-4

Troy Tulowitzki hit two home runs and Jered Weaver allowed five hits over eight innings in leading Long Beach State to a 7-4 victory over Stanford in a winners’ bracket game of an NCAA Division I regional Saturday in front of 2,805 at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond.

Danny Mocny homered, had two doubles and drove in two runs for the 49ers (38-19), who will play in today’s championship round against Stanford. The Cardinal must beat the 49ers twice to advance to next week’s super-regional round.

The Cardinal (46-13) advanced by defeating St. John’s, 7-2, in an elimination game.John Mayberry Jr., son of the former major league player, homered and drove in three runs.

Jed Lowrie, the Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Year, and Chris Minaker also homered for the Cardinal.

Weaver (15-1) gave up two runs -- one earned -- struck out eight and walked one as he bounced back from his only loss of the season in his last start. He retired the final 13 hitters he faced.

The 6-foot-7 junior, who is expected to be one of the top picks in Monday’s amateur draft, has 201 strikeouts and only 19 walks in 136 1/3 innings with an ERA of 1.65.

Stanford loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Weaver struck out Jonny Ash to end the threat.

John Bowker had three hits and drove in two runs for Long Beach State, which had been eliminated from postseason play by Stanford in each of the last two years.

Chris Minaker had three hits and drove in a run for Stanford (45-13), which lost a regional game for the first time since 2001.

Mark Romanczuk (11-3), Stanford’s ace left-hander, took the loss after giving up five runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

The 49ers scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Mocny and Bowker each doubled home a run.

Tulowitzki hit his fourth homer of the season with one out in the third, and then homered again in the seventh. Mocny also homered in the seventh.

Ash singled home two runs in the ninth against 49er closer Neil Jamison.

Notre Dame 6, UC Irvine 5 -- Craig Cooper had four RBIs, including a three-run homer, and Cody Rizzo hit a solo home run as the top-seeded Irish eliminated the second-seeded Anteaters at South Bend, Ind.

The Anteaters (34-22-1) stranded 12 runners for the second day in a row, going winless in their first NCAA Division I regional appearance. Glenn Swanson (6-4) yielded seven hits and all six runs -- five earned.

Richard Mercado hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to break a tie, leading third-seeded Arizona (32-24-1) to a 7-4 victory over Kent State and into its first NCAA regional championship game since 1993.

The Wildcats will play Notre Dame (51-11), which eliminated Kent State, 7-1.

Washington 7, Mississippi 2 -- Aaron Hathaway had three RBIs to help the Huskies eliminate the top-seeded Rebels at Oxford, Miss.

Mississippi ace Mark Holliman (9-3) gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning as the Rebels (39-21) went 0-2 for the first time in six regional appearances.

Washington (40-19-1) then eliminated Western Kentucky, 4-1, to advance to today’s regional final against Tulane.

Matt Kasser threw 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball for the Huskies, who must beat the Green Wave (40-19) twice to win its first regional title.
