Motorists Advised to Avoid California 4
Emergency workers spent Monday evening evacuating about 75 residents from two Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta islands near where a burst levee flooded 12,000 acres of low-lying farmland.
Bacon and Mandeville islands themselves were not in danger of flooding, but the access road to them was surrounded by water.
Meanwhile, work through the weekend saved the main highway between the Bay Area and Stockton from flooding after another levee break last week turned a farming island into a 6-square-mile lake.
California 4 should be avoided by motorists for the remainder of the week, authorities say.
