Communicating in the Melting Pot

Re “Diversity Spoken in 39 Languages,” June 16: When I am the only English-speaking person on the bus -- not unusual in San Francisco -- I cross my fingers that I will reach my destination without a major earthquake or other disaster. I’ve never understood the thoughtless infatuation with a gaggle of languages. Even if you think the ideology of multiculturalism stands up to common sense, what good are diverse cultures if you cannot communicate?

Bible readers will recall that when God decided to discipline the residents of Babel for their hubris, the punishment was creating a plethora of languages so they could not understand each other.
