Condos OKd near Schindler House

A proposed condominium project on Kings Road in West Hollywood that sparked protests from friends and inhabitants of the neighboring Schindler House has been unanimously approved by the West Hollywood Planning Commission.

For more than a year, officials at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, which occupies the historic Rudolf M. Schindler-designed property, have fought the development, saying the complex would dwarf the seminal Modernist building.

In public discussions with the MAK Center, developer Richard Loring has said he and the architect, Lorcan O’Herlihy of Culver City, have been mindful of their historic neighbor in designing the property.

“We’re thrilled with the decision,” O’Herlihy said Friday. “In the end, it will be a great neighbor to the Schindler House.”

MAK director Kimberli Meyer said the center will decide Monday whether to appeal.
