‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’

As more and more films include visual effects shots that are barely perceptible even to viewers on the lookout for them, this year’s nominees were all for films in which the effects couldn’t be missed.

The award went to the team responsible for “The Lord of Rings: The Return of the King,” which includes Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook and Alex Funke, all of whom are repeat winners.

The “Lord of the Rings” pictures have won in this category for the previous two years, making them seem nearly unbeatable this time around. The world of visual effects continues to advance at such a pace that even the much-vaunted transformation of actor Andy Serkis into the digitally created character of Gollum was achieved using different technologies and techniques for “Return of the King” than on the previous pictures in the trilogy.
