Carry-Over Highlights Card

Share

There are two things special about the card that today begins another week of racing at Santa Anita:

* Thanks to a parade of longshots over the weekend, there is a pick six carry-over of $1,413,136. By the third race, the start of the pick six, the total pool could be around $6 million.

* Rock Hard Ten, a promising 3-year-old, will make the second start of his career in today’s second, a $52,000 optional claimer at one mile.

Trained by Jason Orman, Rock Hard Ten was impressive against maidens going seven furlongs in his debut Feb. 7, winning easier than the margin of victory, 1 1/4 lengths, would indicate.

The dark bay colt, who could earn a start in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 3 with a win today, will break from the outside in the field of five under jockey Gary Stevens.

Doug O’Neill, Jeff Mullins, Bobby Frankel and Mike Mitchell, the top trainers at the meet, all could have something to say about the outcome of the pick six. O’Neill will start Sunder Bay in the third and Devote in the sixth. Mullins has five starters in the sequence and four are legitimate contenders. Frankel will send out possible single Anja in the fourth, and Mitchell will have recent claim Sanzibar in the third.

Race of the day: Pacific Island will try for her second win in six days and fourth in five starts since being claimed by trainer and co-owner Richard Dutrow Jr. in today’s eighth, a $45,000 allowance at six furlongs, at Aqueduct.

One for the road: Skiers Appeal was bred for speed and could come out running in today’s fourth at Gulfstream Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick six using Sanzibar and The Road Boss in the third, using Anja and Brilliant Move in the fourth, Rave Party in the fifth, Beautiful Balance and Ditch Digger in the sixth, The Borg Queen in the seventh and Memo House, Really Suspect and Distance Power in the eighth.
