The New York Rangers traded right wing Alex Kovalev to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night for forward prospect Josef Balej and a second-round pick in this year’s draft.

A week before the NHL’s March 9 trade deadline, the Rangers began the dismantling of the team that is all but eliminated from the playoff race for a seventh consecutive season.

New York General Manager Glen Sather announced last week when he gave up his coaching duties that changes were about to take place and he started with Kovalev.

Kovalev was traded by the Rangers for the second time.

“I expected that they were going to trade me,” said Kovalev, who had only 23 goals and 32 assists in 90 games back in New York. “They talked about it a lot, rumors have been around for a while about most of the guys.”

Jeffrey Vanderbeek, a senior executive with the Lehman Brothers investment firm, said he is close to becoming the principal owner of the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils. A source said the transaction was expected to be approved soon by the team’s owners.
