The Kings weren’t done dealing, it turned out, with Monday’s headline-grabbing deal for Anson Carter.

The Kings on Tuesday acquired physical fourth-line winger Jeff Cowan from the Atlanta Thrashers before the trade deadline in exchange for enforcer Kip Brennan, a trade that shifted many more penalty minutes than goals and assists.

Cowan, 27, has 56 points and 363 penalty minutes in 245 career games with the Thrashers and Calgary Flames. Brennan, 23, has one goal and 158 penalty minutes in 41 career games, all with the Kings.

Cowan, 6 feet 2 and 205 pounds, has more upside offensively. He has nine goals and 15 assists this season, both career-highs, in 58 games. His 68 penalty minutes are not a career-best -- he had 115 penalty minutes last season.

Cowan will meet up with the team today in Phoenix and could play tonight against the Coyotes.

“He gives us a bigger body to play on the fourth line, gives us some physical play and helps us with the forecheck,” King General Manager Dave Taylor said.

The new acquisitions spelled the end of playing time for forward Michael Cammalleri, who was assigned to Manchester. Cammalleri had a goal and an assist in seven games after being called up three weeks ago.... Right wing Scott Barney was activated from injured reserve and practiced with the team Tuesday for the first time since sustaining a separated shoulder Feb. 13 against the Buffalo Sabres. Barney could skate with contact for the first time Friday.
