Police Dog Rousts Man After 16-Hour Standoff
A 34-year-old man who kept Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies at bay for 16 hours was finally forced out of his apartment by a police dog late Saturday, authorities said Sunday.
Albert Fernandez was suspected of threatening his wife with a gun, prompting sheriff’s deputies to evacuate the neighborhood in the 900 block of Mount Olive Drive.
After hours of unsuccessful communication, a struggle with the police dog finally extricated the suspect about 11 p.m. He was treated at a local hospital for his injuries, deputies said.
Fernandez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm, but Deputy Alba Yates said that no guns had been recovered from the apartment.
Fernandez, who also was booked on suspicion of dissuading a witness, is scheduled to appear in court March 23.
