Madonna Sues Warner to Sever Label Venture

Share

Madonna’s Maverick Records label sued Warner Music Group to sever their contract, accusing the record conglomerate of undercutting its artists and cheating the megastar and her partners out of millions of dollars.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, comes amid an impasse in discussions over the future of Maverick, a joint venture Warner Music launched with the pop singer in 1992.

For several months, Madonna and her partners had been pressing for Warner to buy out their 60% share of Maverick, which is home to such acts as Michelle Branch, but the two sides couldn’t come to terms.

A Warner Music spokesman said Maverick’s claims are “without merit” but said the dispute “in no way impacts the company’s deep respect for Madonna.”
