When Juan Encarnacion slips on his 2003 World Series ring for the first time tonight at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, he could become the envy of not only every Dodger teammate, but also every Angel.

The $40,000 ring, which features 229 diamonds and 13 rubies, is more than twice as large as the ones presented to the Angels for winning the 2002 World Series.

“It’s kind of big to wear,” said Encarnacion, the former Florida Marlin outfielder who saw a sketch of the ring during a visit to Miami. “It’s a good design. Everybody playing this game would like to have one of those.”

The 14-karat white gold ring, which has 18-karat gold insets, includes a rare teal diamond to represent the eye of a marlin leaping through the team’s logo. The ring carries Encarnacion’s name, the Marlins’ 91-71 regular-season record, a picture of the World Series trophy and the results of postseason series against the San Francisco Giants (3-1), Chicago Cubs (4-3) and New York Yankees (4-2).

Encarnacion, acquired by the Dodgers in a December trade, would like to acquire another ring with his new team, and so far he’s off to a good start. The outfielder, who hit his 100th home run Sunday against the Montreal Expos, is batting .275 with four homers and 16 runs batted in heading into a three-game series tonight against the Marlins.

Encarnacion and the rest of the Dodger lineup will face the Marlins’ top three starting pitchers, World Series MVP Josh Beckett, Brad Penny and Dontrelle Willis.

“They have a lot of weapons on that team,” Dodger Manager Jim Tracy said. “They have speed at the top of their lineup, they have power in the middle, they have power starting pitching.

“I think it’s going to be a good test for us.”

Outfielder Jayson Werth, recovering from a strained abdominal muscle, is accompanying the Dodgers on the trip and could be ready for a rehabilitation assignment by the time the team returns home Sunday.
