Some help getting the exercise ball rolling

Share

The exercise ball has become a staple in many gyms as well as a favorite piece of home equipment. Working out on an unstable surface, such as a ball, engages more muscles and helps develop important core muscles. Despite its simplicity (no complicated instrument panel), it can be difficult for beginners to safely and effectively maneuver the ball. “Exercise Ball for Beginners” (HarperResource, 2004) is an illustrated guide that includes a wide variety of movements for all parts of the body.

“Exercise Ball for Beginners”: This comprehensive and easy-to-follow guide is divided into exercises for core training, toning and stretching. Author Chrissie Gallagher-Mundy, owner of the London Academy of Personal Trainers, includes a guide to proper body placement, safety tips, warm-ups and cool-downs. The book also features 15-, 30- and 45-minute routines that can be done with the ball.

One of the book’s greatest assets is the large photographs that show each stage of the exercises. There’s also information on what muscles are engaged. The book is designed to form an easel, with pages that flip over, so exercisers can view it easily while working out.
