Shrek 2

Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz

DreamWorks, $25

In the three years since “Shrek,” the 3-D animation technique has improved by leaps and bounds. The characters are more lifelike than ever -- you can count the hairs on Shrek’s chest.

On the DVD, out Friday, even the animated menu featuring the main characters is clever, making especially good use of Eddie Murphy’s wisecracking Donkey. Extras include an informative mini-doc on the “Tech of Shrek,” technical goofs, a progression reel chronicling the characters’ evolution and a kicky “American Idol” spoof in which Shrek, Fiona and a 3-D Simon Cowell comment on characters’ performances.

Two commentary tracks with the filmmakers, including director Andrew Adamson, offer a glimpse into the evolution of “Shrek 2.” For kids, there’s “Shrek’s Music Room” and interactive games.

California Split

Elliott Gould, George Segal

Columbia TriStar, $25

This neglected Robert Altman gem from 1974 finally makes it to home video. In this comedy-drama, Elliott Gould and George Segal play down-on-their-luck compulsive gamblers who embark on a series of betting escapades. Ann Prentiss and Gwen Welles play amiable prostitutes and Bert Remsen offers an amusing turn as a transvestite.

Around the World in 80 Days

Jackie Chan, Steve Coogan

Walt Disney, $30

Jackie Chan has taken some recent beatings at the box office, with “The Tuxedo,” “The Medallion,” “Shanghai Knights” and this slapstick misfire of the Jules Verne classic.

In this version, eccentric inventor Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan) bets some staid scientists that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. Chan plays his valet, Passepartout, who’s on the lam for stealing a jade Buddha.

The undistinguished digital edition contains a making-of documentary that fails to identify any of the participants, a marginally better mini-doc on Chan’s stunts and ho-hum commentary by Coogan and director Frank Coraci.
