Magnitude 6 Quake Hits Eastern Island, Kills Six
From Times Wire Reports
A strong earthquake in eastern Indonesia killed six people, injured 40 and damaged hundreds of buildings, seismologists and officials said.
The magnitude 6 quake was centered 20 miles off the eastern coast of Alor island, more than 1,000 miles east of Jakarta, the capital, said seismologist Rahmat Triono in Jakarta.
The earthquake and two aftershocks could be felt as far away as the East Timorese capital of Dili, where witnesses said residents ran from their homes in panic.
