Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden was hoping for a big play. He wound up with a big problem.

When Bowden called a bootleg on freshman quarterback Drew Weatherford’s first college play, the plan went awry: Weatherford sprained his ankle, leaving the Seminoles with only one healthy quarterback.

It was one of the few tough spots for the No. 8-ranked Seminoles (3-1) in a 38-16 victory over North Carolina on Saturday. But now Bowden needs to find a backup for starting quarterback Wyatt Sexton for Florida State’s game at Syracuse on Saturday.

“Might be Sexton and a walk-on,” Bowden said.

Chris Rix, who began the season as Florida State’s starter, is out because of an ankle injury. Bowden might have to go with Xavier Lee, whom he wanted to hold out with a redshirt year, or sophomore walk-on Tommy Keane, who has never thrown a pass in college.

Timmy Chang’s 378 yards passing in a 44-16 victory by Hawaii (1-2, 1-1) over Tulsa (1-4, 0-1) in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday at Honolulu moved him into second on the NCAA all-time list with 13,857 yards passing.

The fifth-year senior is chasing the 13-year-old NCAA mark of 15,031 yards passing set by Brigham Young’s Ty Detmer from 1988 to 1991.

Miami offensive tackle Eric Winston is out for the season after injuring his left knee in the Hurricanes’ 27-3 win at Georgia Tech on Saturday. Coach Larry Coker wouldn’t give specifics.
