Parks Assails Mayor’s Public Safety Record

From Times Staff Reports

Councilman Bernard C. Parks, the former police chief who is running for mayor, pointed to a rise in gang-related homicides as a sign that Mayor James K. Hahn is not doing enough to keep the city safe.

Police said gang-related killings through August of this year totaled 212, compared with 180 for the same period last year.

Parks says a Police Department schedule that allows some officers to work three 12-hour days is partly to blame.

An LAPD spokeswoman said the shorter week does not cut the number of officers on the streets.
