Shell-Led Group to Ship LNG to Mexico, U.S.
A Royal Dutch/Shell-led group has clinched the first deal to export Russian liquefied natural gas to North America, in a $6-billion agreement to supply Mexico and the U.S. from its Sakhalin project.
Sakhalin Energy, which also includes Japan’s Mitsui and Mitsubishi, said it would supply a total of 37 million tons of supercooled gas to the Energia Costa Azul plant in Mexico over 20 years from 2008.
Under the deal, Sakhalin also will ship 1.6 million tons of LNG a year to a new Mexican terminal that San Diego-based Sempra Energy will build and Shell will partly rent.
