Group shows bias

Kudos to reporter Dana Calvo, who had the honesty and good sense to question the “nonpartisan” designation of groups like Women’s Voices. Women’s Vote. and 1000 Flowers [“Stars Shine Light on a Potent Voting Bloc: Single Women,” Oct. 8]. The WVWV website’s links include one to the National Women’s Law Center, a brief perusal of which will leave no doubt that it is a garden-variety anti-Bush group. There is no corresponding WVWV link to a pro-Bush site, so it is not a great stretch to assume that WVWV prefers to direct its new voters to Democrat candidates.

No reputable media organization should accept these group’s nonpartisan claim at face value. I remember when MoveOn.org first began as an alleged “nonpartisan” organization opposed to impeaching and removing Bill Clinton from office (the name is from their position at the time that Congress should censure the president and “move on”). Virtually all major media outlets accepted MoveOn’s self-description and dutifully described them as nonpartisan. Six years later, no one can doubt the true nature of MoveOn.org and its aggressive partisanship. Newspapers like The Times should be careful not to fall in the same trap with these women’s voter groups.
