About 64,000 Peruvians are surviving on international food aid after the harshest weather in decades devastated their harvests, the United Nations said.

In June, the Andean mountain region recorded the worst frost and snowstorms in three decades, with temperatures falling to 31 degrees below zero.

The weather destroyed up to 80% of the cereal crop. Livestock died of cold or starvation.
