Supervisors Won’t Cover ‘Christian’ Quotation
The Board of Supervisors unanimously voted Tuesday not to cover a controversial quote engraved in a mahogany wall of the county courthouse.
The Theodore Roosevelt quote, “The true Christian is the true citizen,” is one of four presidential sayings engraved on the walls of a courtroom.
The Anti-Defamation League complained this year that the quote could make non-Christians feel unwelcome, so the county and courthouse officials decided to cover it with a mahogany panel. But a lawsuit by a conservative Christian lawyer argued that hiding the quote was censorship and would illegally alter a historic building.
