Children’s Hospitals
Summary: Measure would authorize the state to issue $750 million in bonds for construction, expansion and renovation of children’s hospitals.
Supporters: A coalition of children’s hospitals put the measure on the ballot. It is also supported by such groups as the California Nurses Assn. and the California Parent Teacher Assn.
Opponents: There is no organized opposition, though many tax watchdog groups, newspaper editorialists and others point out that the measure does not specify how the money would be spent.
Impact: Over the life of the bonds, the cost to the state would be more than $1.5 billion. Supporters argue that the money is needed as healthcare costs rise and hospitals are suffering from a lack of funding. Opponents note, however, that there is no guarantee that the proposition will lead to expanded healthcare for children.
