SWIMMERS, surfers and toe-dippers should wait at least three days after rain stops before going to the beach, warns the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and Heal the Bay, which tracks coastal water quality.

Other reminders:

* Stay 100 yards from flowing storm drains even after the rain subsides. Splashing in swells can result in skin rash, nausea and vomiting.

* Keep Styrofoam, plastic and other rubbish from washing overboard. They harm marine life and foul the ocean.

* Use rubber gloves to avoid tideland contamination when removing litter.
