Jared Zabransky and the No. 18 Boise State Broncos reduced Timmy Chang’s bid to break the Division I-A passing record to a footnote Friday night, routing Hawaii, 69-3, for their 19th victory in a row.

Chang fell 14 yards short of breaking former Brigham Young standout Ty Detmer’s career passing yardage record, and threw four interceptions to break former Purdue quarterback Mark Herrmann’s Division I-A interception mark with 74.

“I didn’t throw with accuracy and we didn’t sustain drives,” Chang said. “You do those things against a great team like Boise State and it’s not going to work out.”

Zabransky ran for 123 yards and four touchdowns, including a school-record 85-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and passed for 164 yards for the Broncos (8-0, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference).

“That 85-yard run was pretty nice,” Zabransky said.

Boise State scored 69 points in a row, including a 38-point third quarter, en route to its 23rd consecutive conference victory.

The Broncos have won 24 games in a row at home, the longest such streak in Division I-A.

“I thought two years ago when we played Hawaii that was about as close to a perfect game as I’ve ever been involved with,” Coach Dan Hawkins said about the Broncos’ 58-31 home victory in 2002.

“I think this was probably better. It was unbelievable.”

Chang entered needing 241 yards to break the record of 15,031 yards set by Detmer from 1988 to ’91. But Boise State’s pass defense -- ranked 103rd in the country -- frustrated Chang into his worst game of the season.

Chang completed 26 of 53 passes for 227 yards.

The 66-point margin tied for the worst road loss in Hawaii (3-4, 3-3) history, a 66-0 loss at Wyoming in 1996.
