Water Cleanup Bonds

Share

Summary: The water bond, which requires approval from two-thirds of voters for passage, would raise $500 million to clean up the city’s waterways so that they are in compliance with the federal Clean Water Act.

Supporters: The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously in July to put the measure before voters. It has widespread support from environmental groups, including the Sierra Club and Santa Monica BayKeeper, and business groups that include the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn. The groups say the initiative would help prevent ocean and beach pollution, as well as improve neighborhoods by eliminating flooding and improving water quality.

Opponents: There has been no organized opposition.

Impact: The bond would cost the average homeowner $35 a year for 24 years and would raise $250 million to clean rivers, bays, lakes and beaches; $100 million to improve water quality and stop polluted runoff; $75 million to clean and reuse storm water; and $75 million to conserve water and protect drinking water supplies.
