‘You’re fired!’ tops TV buzzword list
You can forget about “fahgeddaboutit!” as far as television catch phrases are concerned.
According to a new list of top television buzzwords, the favorite expression from “The Sopranos” is so yesterday that it has been replaced by several new phrases from this past TV season, including Donald Trump’s message to losers on “The Apprentice”: “You’re fired!”
Trump’s famed dismissal topped the TV buzzword list for the 2003-04 season by Global Language Monitor (www.LanguageMonitor.com), a group that keeps track of word use.
Global Language Monitor head Paul JJ Payack said that close behind Trump’s phrase was “Mess O’ Potamia” used on the “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” to describe events in Iraq, and “Girlie Men,” a favorite expression used by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to deride opponents.
Also in the top 10 were “infectious disease,” from the ever-expanding “CSI” detective series franchise, “OCD” for Tony Shaloub’s trademark obsessive-compulsive disorder on “Monk,” and “extreme makeover” from reality shows.
