‘Survivor’ not friendly to ‘Joey’

The tribes have spoken, and it turns out they were louder than the Tribbiani clan. At least that’s what can be gleaned from Thursday night’s ratings, in which the premiere of CBS’ “Survivor: Vanuatu” topped an expanded second episode of NBC’s “Friends” spinoff “Joey.”

“Survivor” debuted at 8 p.m. with 19.64 million viewers, well ahead of the 14.9 million who watched the 35-minute “Joey.” “Vanuatu” also won in the key young adults age group.

The veteran reality show and a repeat of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” also beat the “super-sized” season premiere of “Will & Grace” on NBC. Still, this was the lowest-rated “Survivor” among 18- to 49-year-olds since the original “Survivor” premiered in 2000.

For its part, NBC crowed about how “Joey” managed to hang on to most of its premiere-week numbers. The network has clearly decided to treat this as a strong-starting new sitcom rather than a mildly disappointing spinoff of a departed hit.
