From Times Staff Reports

A traffic accident sparked a wildfire that continued to burn out of control on the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest in Yucaipa late Thursday, authorities said.

No structures were immediately threatened by the blaze, which began about 9:45 p.m. and scorched more than 30 acres near California 38. Shayne Canady, a dispatcher for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said “that could change” if flames jumped the highway. A light breeze helped keep the blaze down, but fire officials were concerned that the wind direction might change.

By midnight, about 70 firefighters from the state, U.S. Forest Service and San Bernardino County Fire Department were battling the flames.
