Adventures in store for Long Beach Opera
Long Beach Opera will continue its tradition of adventurous programming next season with a production that will interweave readings from Goethe’s influential novella “The Sorrows of Young Werther” and a performance of Schubert’s last song cycle, “Winterreise (Winter Journey).” Both works deal with the pain of unrequited love.
The staging, the first of three company offerings in 2005, will be presented May 20, 21, 22 and 25 at the Edison Theater in Long Beach. The Schubert will be performed in German by a singer not yet named. Derek Horton will direct.
Announced Monday by General Director Andreas Mitisek, the 2005 season will continue with Handel’s “Semele” on June 4 and 12 at the Carpenter Center for Performing Arts.
Isabel Milenski will direct this production, to be presented in English with designs by Darcy Scanlin. The season will close June 11 and 15 at the Carpenter Center with the Brecht-Weill social satire “The Threepenny Opera.” Christopher Alden will direct the work, which will also be sung in English.
Mitisek will conduct both “Semele” and “The Threepenny Opera” and will play the piano for “Winterreise” and “Sorrows.”
